As a clinician with over a decade of experience across community mental health, managed care, and group practices, I watched brilliant, empathetic people burn out and leave the field. I used to wonder why, until I stopped looking at the individuals and started looking at the organizational structure. The truth is, most agency models forget that workforce retention is deeply rooted in relationship support. If the structure isn't actively protecting the team's well being, burnout is inevitable. I learned this firsthand. When I entered the field in 2008, I nearly left within six months due to chronic stress and a lack of resources.
